Departure from JFK on El Al 002 at 19:30.

 

Tuesday July 25

Arrival at Ben Gurion airport at 13:05.  Opening ceremony on “My Jewish Roots in Israel” and tree-planting at JNF forest.

Travel north along the Mediterranean Coast to Haifa.  Check-in and swimming time in the Mediterranean before a welcome dinner at the hotel.

Wednesday July 26

Visit the charming pioneering town of Zichron Ya'akov and the First Aliyah Museum.  Stroll through the shuk in the Druze village of Daliat-al-Carmel.

Program with the Partnership 2000 community of Afula.

Enjoy a family kayaking adventure on the Jordan River.  Check-in and dinner at hotel.

Optional free evening in Tiberias.

Thursday July 27

Ascend the Golan Heights for a lookout over Kuneitra from Mt. Bental.  See the OZ 77 movie at Kibbutz Elrom about the fierce tank battle that took place near here during the Yom Kippur War.

Visit the reconstructed Talmudic village and ancient synagogue of Katzrin.  See the movie about Elisha bar Abuya and religious tolerance.

Continue to the mystical city of Zefat (Safed) to explore the ancient synagogues and shop in the Jewish Quarter and artist colony.

Enjoy a gourmet dinner in a private home in the artist colony with a great storyteller over dessert.

Friday July 28

Enjoy a refreshing nature walk through Tel Dan

to the ancient Israelite remains.  Visit the Naot Mordechai Sandal Factory (Teva / Naot sandals.  Continue to the ancient port of Caesarea to explore the theater, hippodrome, bath complex and Crusader remains and see the new computer simulation and audio/visual presentation. 

Continue to the seaside resort of Herzliya to check-in and swim before getting ready for Shabbat.

Kabbalat Shabbat as a group on the beach as the sun sets over the Mediterranean.  Festive Shabbat dinner at the hotel.

Shabbat July 29

Shabbat morning tefilot followed by lunch at the hotel.

Afternoon free to enjoy the beach or take advantage of the Shizen hotel spa.

Evening free to enjoy the nightlife at the Herlizya Marina or nearby  Tel Aviv

Sunday July 30

See where David Ben Gurion declared the establishment of the State of Israel at Independence Hall.

Continue to Rechovot to the Ayalon Institute, a secret underground bullet factory from the Mandate Period.

Dig up history with your hands at an archaeological excavation at Bet Guvrin.

Head to Kfar HaNokdim Bedouin Ranch for a camel trek, Bedouin hospitality and dinner. Later, the younger set (and those who wish to join them) will get into sleeping bags for an overnight in the Bedouin tents (there are bathrooms & showers on site) while the rest of the group will head to the Inbar Hotel in Arad for a few hours of sleep before our sunrise ascent to  Masada.

Monday July 31

Early morning ascent of Herod’s mountain fortress in time for sunrise.  After our Bar/Bat Mitzvah affirmation service, (Torah scroll provided) explore why the Jewish rebels chose to live here after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans.  Descend by cable car.  Breakfast at the Masada guest house.

Hike to the Nahal David waterfall at Ein Gedi.  Float in the Dead Sea.

Head to Jerusalem, where we’ll stop at Mount Scopus for the breathtaking view and Shehechiyanu prayer.

Tuesday August 1

Visit Robinson's Arch and explore the Southern Wall excavations and the Kotel Tunnels in order to better understand the centrality of the Temple in ancient times.

Lunch stop and shopping time in the Jewish Quarter and Cardo.

Walking tour through the Christian Quarter and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (time permitting).

Evening:  Israel & the Media Workshop with Neil Lazarus.

Wednesday August 2

 

Erev Tisha B’Av

Visit Lifeline for the Elderly -Yad L’Kashish-

Program at the Bible Lands Museum.

Lunch stop followed by meeting with Dr. Michael Oren, author of Six Days of War and fellow of the Shalem Center.

Seudat Mafseket (last meal before the fast) at the hotel.

Evening:  Reading of Aicha (Lamentations) overlooking the Old City walls.

Thursday August 3

 

Tisha B’Av

We learn and remember at Yad Vashem, including the historical museum and the Children’s Memorial.

Friday August 4

“If you will it, it is no dream”-Visit the new museum on the Zionist movement at Mount Herzl.

Hands-on Mitzvah project at Yad Eliezer.

Walk through the Machaneh Yehuda open-air vegetable market (shuk) before returning to the hotel to prepare for Shabbat.  Kabbalat Shabbat at Kol Haneshama followed by festive Shabbat dinner at the hotel.

Shabbat August 5

Shabbat morning tefilot at Moreshet Israel or Shira Hadasha followed by lunch at the hotel.

Walking tour of Jerusalem neighborhoods with Rabbi Hammerman and rest or pool time.

Late afternoon seudat shlishit (traditional third Shabbat “meal”) picnic and summary discussion.

Group Havdalah, check-out and farewell dinner.

Transfer to the airport for departing flight.
