TBE Rabbinical Search

The TBE Rabbinical Search Process is underway. This page is designed to keep congregants informed and up-to-date.

To the left is a timeline of events leading up to today. Click on any event title to read more about that event.

One of the most significant undertakings for lay leaders and congregants in a synagogue is the search for a new rabbi. It is a time to examine the past, draw on the present, and lay out the future. How does the synagogue operate now? What is its culture and spiritual underpinnings? What do outsiders think of the synagogue? What changes must be made to grow and realize its vision?

As stated in the Rabbinical Assembly’s Rabbinic Search Guide, to be successful, these questions and others must be answered with intention, self-reflection and public discussion.

Intention means approaching the task with discipline and avoiding the distractions. Self-reflection must be done honestly, regardless of the determination. Public discussion must be both internal and communal.

It is not about finding the best rabbi, but finding the best rabbinic fit for the congregation.

These are the principles which will guide Temple Beth El as we embark on our journey.

May it be Your will, Adonoi, to guide us in peace, to accompany our steps with peace, to sustain us in peace, to lead us to our desired destination in health and joy and peace.
— Tfillat HaDerekh (A Traveler’s Prayer) from the forthcoming Lev Shalem Weekday Siddur
